Running remotely

Sorry if this seems like an obvious answer but here it goes.

One of DBAs wants to use this to back up a production sql xpress instance.  I was hoping to install the exe on our task server and run the commands against the remote SQL server.  THe thing is that I get Unhandled excpetion errors when I try to run "expressmaint -?".  Does this imply that expressmaint has to be copied to the server where SQL Express is?

This is a .NET security issue. Because expressmaint is a .NET executable and you are trying to run it from a remote location (UNC path) you are getting a .NET security error as by default the UNC path will not be trusted for the operations that expressmaint performs. You can set up an exception for expressmaint using the .Net 2.0 Configuration Tool (under Start>Programs>Administrative Tools) by setting up a new Machine Code Group based on URL membership for the UNC path and give it Full Trust however you may find it easier to simply copy it locally :-)
